About

The department of Sociology was founded from the inception of the college, Jonai Girls’ College, Jonai 1994 with a vision of relentless pursuit of excellence to bring forth secular, socially committed, morally upright, physically and emotionally matured citizens. The department has become well known among academia and even in the general public due to the outstanding work of teachers who have been serving at the department all through the years. Keeping up with the tradition in the college, the department nurtures the students to have holistic development of their self and personality with heightened level of aspiration through our programmes, extension activities, field visits and alike. The department has currently three permanent faculties and one lecturer with 79 students in the BA Sociology programme at present. Sociology Curriculum The Sociology curriculum is intended to provide an understanding of the interaction and workings of Societies, their institutions, organisations and groups, through an introduction to the basic concepts, theoretical perspectives and methodological approaches of the discipline, Students are familiarized with the sociological imagination, encouraging a deeper understanding of the relationships between personal experience and the Social world. Courses not only acquaint students with diverse cultures and social structures but also emphasize the dynamics of power and inequality on local, national and global levels, as they operate through race, ethnicity, class, ability, gender and sexuality our curriculum emphasizes the concepts and practice of social justice and public sociology.

Sociology Dept. is made up of faculty who are energetically and? effectively engaged in teaching, research and community building. Sociology classes are rigorous, inclusive inspiring.? Students develop Sociological imagination while going enriching? experiences and tangible skills that will lead to future success.
Mission
Sociology department provides a high quality inclusive educational? experience. Prepares students to become engaged and effective members of their? communities. Interacts regularly with stakeholders from wider community producing? valuable public Sociology.

Programme Specific Outcomes (POS)
1. The programme seeks to develop in students the sociological knowledge and skills that will enable them to think critically and imaginatively about society and social issues.
2. Better understanding of real life situation. The ability to apply sociological concepts and theories to the real world and ultimately to their everyday lives.
3. Develop sociological understanding. The ability to demonstrate sociological understanding of social phenomena.
4. Professional and career opportunities. Students will have the opportunity to join professional careers in sociology and allied fields.
5. Students of sociology stream have to work beyond the class room boundary at the time of field study activities. As a result good communication skill develops while interacting with local people.
